I hope you all enjoyed my last post, but now its time for another. This time I have chosen to evaluate a game I found on the Cbeebies website called Alphablocks.

Alphablocks is an educational phonics games aimed at young children. It attempts to teach children how to blend letters together to make sounds and then words. It does this by using animated blocks representing each letter. It is also a major tv show and loved by many children. The Alphablocks are 26 letters who fall from the sky onto an empty white screen and discover if they hold hands together they can make a word and bring their world to life.

This game, although far fetched for myself is very engaging for children. It is used in the special needs school I worked in with children with Autism and it certainly brings them to life. (the children, not the blocks). The love the animated letters and fight for the choice of which episode they will watch. After the episode their is spelling games related to what they just watched. Its fantastic to watch how engaged the children are with this game.

It supports learning as it is compatible with computer programs and it is free. Phonics is an important area in learning to read and children become so engrossed in this game that they forget they are actually learning. The website also offers free downloads on coloring pages related to the game.

Although this game provides freedom to experiment with the letters, it does not align with the Montessori approach. Which is unfortunate. This game is based on fantasy and Montessori believed children need real world experiences, and natural materials. Nothing about the Alphablocks is “real”.

In my opinion this game transforms the learning of phonics as it brings the letters to life. It is easy to roll out as it is a free website which can be accessed by all computers. Teachers using it do not need to give a demonstration. Although a computer lab may be need to roll out. If a computer lab is not available this can still be used as children may watch in groups or take turns which are also essential skills they need to learn.

I found this game to be excellent for young children, although older children would become board very quickly. I enjoyed this game and may well use it in my future classroom.
